National Trust Heddon Valley
UPDATE (MAY 2025): Devon County Council will be carrying out work to replace the bridge next to the Hunters Inn at Heddon Valley between 12 May and 22 December 2025. The route to Heddon’s Mouth will become a linear route during this time and due to the narrow path with insufficient passing place, only one Tramper will be permitted to use this route at a time (unless both Trampers are in the same party). Also be aware that when arriving by car that it will not be possible to approach from the west (see full details on this Devon CC page).
Six miles of towering cliffs and secluded coves, wooded river valleys and heather moorland in Exmoor National Park. There are two Tramper routes available:
Hunters Inn to Heddon’s Mouth – 1.5 miles there and back. A delightful route alongside the River Heddon to Heddon’s Mouth culminating with a view point overlooking the stony beach. Thanks to recent investment in an improved trail and new bridge, this is now a circular route.
Victorian Carriageway towards Woody Bay – 4 miles there and back. Offers some of the finest coastal views in the South West. Starting at near sea level you climb gradually to 720 feet with an ever expanding and impressive view. Tramper users must be accompanied by a non-disabled person for safety reasons at this site.
- Due to the more challenging terrain, we recommend that you have prior experience of using the Tramper
- Path surfaces – stones, grass, muddy patches, uneven in places
- Path gradients – flat and hilly stretches
- A couple of gates along the trails The Tramper is available from 10am to 4.30pm everyday.
A small shop and ice cream parlour is open on site during the summer season and the Hunter’s Inn is open all year.
Opening times – The Tramper hire service is available weekends only during winter months but is available 7 days a week between April and September. Please check the NT Heddon Valley website for details.
The Tramper has been provided with financial support from the Exmoor National Park Sustainable Development Fund, provided by DEFRA.
