Explore one of Devon’s most popular outdoor attractions where hundreds of donkeys are waiting to meet you.
Located on a scenic hillside above Sidmouth on the Jurassic Coast, this tranquil setting is the home for The Donkey Sanctuary, a charity dedicated to the welfare of donkeys since 1969.
Admission is free (although donations to the charity’s work are welcomed) and the attraction is normally open to visitors every day except Christmas Day.
Where You’ll Explore
Hire a Tramper (all terrain mobility scooter) and you’ll be able to explore the full extent of Slade House Farm which stretches over 100 acres. In the Main Yard you can listen to expert talks (at 11am and 2pm) from those caring for the donkeys – and, if they’re willing, get to stroke a donkey – and take in some of the exhibitions. The paddocks and shelters closest to the Visitor Centre allow you to see the all of the adoption donkeys and enjoy views across the valley.
The Tramper really comes into its own for those looking to explore some of the outer areas of The Sanctuary where you’ll enjoy routes up to 3km taking you through pastures where the newest arrived donkeys settle in.
There’s more to enjoy back at the Visitor Centre where you’ll find the multi award winning Kitchen serving delicious meals and refreshments with a stunning view towards the coast. Don’t miss the shop for a reminder of your visit to The Donkey Sanctuary before you leave.

Thanks to Access for All funding via East Devon National Landscape 2026 will see us trialling a new offer where the Tramper will occasionally be available at East Devon beauty spots where it would not be possible to offer regular hiring. This means that The Donkey Sanctuary Tramper will spend a few days each year at other locations but the team will provide plenty of other options
