An Urban Oasis
A much valued and award winning green space Sandwell Valley Country Park – run by Sandwell Valley Borough Metropolitan Council – combines multiple nature reserves, historic sites and family attractions to provide the perfect day out.
The Park was once the site of Sandwell Priory, a Benedictine Monastery whose closure was a precursor to the dissolution of monasteries under Cardinal Wolsey and then rebuilt as Sandwell Hall – the remains of which can be clearly seen today, along with the well after which the area is known. The small lakes or ‘pools’ nearby are also a reminder of the Hall’s development and provide a peaceful haven for wildlife in the woodland as part of Priory Wood Local Nature Reserve.
Further into the Country Park enjoy open spaces around Swan Pool which is home to a sailing club and a popular circular walk. Those looking for a longer walk could continue onto Forge Mill Lake (an RSPB reserve) and home to Forge Mill Farm, a family attraction and handy location for café and toilet facilities.
Back at the Visitor Centre there is a shop, a café and walled kitchen garden!
Hiring a Tramper
The Tramper will be available from the Sandwell Valley Visitor Centre – advance booking is recommended.
Hire fee is £2.50/ hour. The Tramper is available 10 – 3 pm, 7 days per week.
Parking (including accessible spaces) is located around 200 metres from the Visitor Centre so if this distance would prove difficult it may be possible to arrange in advance for the Tramper to be brought to the car.
