We had the honour of leading off a leg of the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) flag relay, organised to celebrate the charity’s 30th anniversary.
The flag relay is travelling over 2,000 miles around the UK between the National Coastwatch’s 60 coastal stations.
Our partner, National Trust West Dorset, invited Countryside Mobility to participate by Tramper when the relay came to Hive Beach.
Nevil Salisbury Rood, a volunteer auditor for Countryside Mobility since its inception took the honour of flag bearer. National Trust has been operating tramper hire at Hive Beach for the last year, helping many visitors explore. It was fantastic that they chose to highlight the importance of accessibility for this leg of the relay.
The flag followed one of the spectacular routes enjoyed by visitors who hire the tramper at Hive Beach. The flag was then transferred to local horse riders to continue the relay towards Portland Bill.
The NCI are the ‘eyes and ears’ of the coast, playing a vital role in coastal safety, working closely with HM Coastguard. You can find out more information about the charity at www.nci.org.uk.
